Digital Recording at La Commenda di San Eufrosino, Volpaia (Tuscany), Italy April 28-30, 2008

Don't look to the booklet for information on this disc of solo cello music, for it contains, other than a tracklist and recording information, only variants on the abstract polka-dot painting by Jerry Zeniuk shown on the cover. One might have wanted to know something about the degree to which the music is improvised, for one thing. Although it's all compositionally credited to cellist Ernst Reijseger and a couple of other composers, it doesn't seem likely that every note appears on paper; the music is punctuated by rapid flourishes that make use of various capabilities of the cello. There are passages involving hand percussion on the body of the cello, for example, and modern jazz drumming and the freer varieties of jazz in general seem to be important components of the music. Except in a few places, Reijseger doesn't really use radically extended techniques. Instead, a good part of the pleasure of the music involves hearing all the possibilities he can find in conventional uses of the cello. Among these are very high overtones, a quiet toneless scraping of the strings, bent notes, and a variety of plucking attacks; hear the insistent buzz on the lowest string in Wake (track 3), which consists of a long chain of harmonies, like those in Chopin's famed E minor Prelude, finally fading away to nothing. Tonally the music makes use of extended harmonies; it generally has clear tonal centers. The jazz influence is by no means thoroughgoing; there are echoes Bach's music for unaccomapanied cello, of Romantic virtuoso music, and of minimalism. Reijseger never does the same thing twice, and in fact the pieces resemble each other very little, which is quite an accomplishment for a disc of solo cello music. The sound, recorded in a medieval Tuscan commenda, or commandry house, is magical.
