Though she is mainly associated with the Danish jazz scene, it is very difficult to categorize Susi Hyldgaard's style of music. Her creativity, and determination to explore the areas between such different genres as jazz, pop, house, trip-hop as well as the good old singer-songwriter traditions, has made her a unique voice in Danish music.

Susi Hyldgaard was born into a musical family with her father playing the contrabass, she quickly learned to love music: Susi Hyldgaard was only five when she began playing the classical piano, and later the guitar and the accordion. She studied musiology at the University of Copenhagen and the Berklee College of Music. She also took up a career of cultural journalism, but in the end her own creativity conquered and Hyldgaard chose to devote herself to her music.

Susi Hyldgaard released her debut as a soloist, the highly acclaimed My Female Family, in 1996. In 2000 she released her second album, Something Special Just For You. With her third album Homesweethome from 2002 Susi Hyldgaard managed to catch the attention of the international jazz scene, which gave her an international contract with the German label Enja, where she released her albums from 2002 and onwards.

On the album Blush from 2005 Susi Hyldgaard collaborated with multi-instrumentalist Dickon Hinchcliff of the aknowledged British rockband Tindersticks, and also with the remixer Matthew Herbert who is recognised for his work with popular acts like R.E.M. and Moloko. With collaborators like these Susi Hyldgaard has distanced herself from the jazz scene and moved closer to the scene of rock and pop music.

On the 2007 album Magic Words To Steal Your Heart Away Susi Hyldgaard has released her very first standard album. Performing on the album along with Susi Hyldgaard is the Italian (though Paris-based) drummer Aldo Romano.

Susi Hyldgaard has marked herself out as a singer with a personal, almost intimate touch. While exposing herself as fragile she is at the same time bold and original. The music reviewers appreciate Susi Hyldgaard's ground-breaking approach to genres and many critics have thus identified reference points as various as Bjцrk, Joni Mitchell and Tori Amos.

In 2002 Susi Hyldgaard received the 3 year working grant of the Danish Arts Foundation's Committee for Popular Music. From 2003 to 2007 she has been a member of the three-person expert committee for popular music of the Danish Arts Foundation.
