Lina Nyberg has been a fixture on the Swedish Jazz scene for over ten years. This being her eighth release, Nyberg continues to explore new musical horizons. Utilizing various rhythmic patterns with a keen sense of writing, Nyberg is one of the few vocalists out there wiling to not only take chances with the voice but also with the pen.

Here is a vocalist of impeccable style and control. Lina Nyberg is one of a new breed of singer who makes each tune her own. All but one of the compositions are written by Nyberg. Hers is the type of voice you can listen to for long periods of time. We are so used to hearing vocalists cover the standards, that it is refreshing to hear someone who actually writes her own material. We get to hear something different and personal. It's nice to her a vocalist that follows in the tradition of Alice Babs and Monica Zetterlund. Two legends of the Swedish Jazz scene. Also featured is her new band, Pling. Nyberg's Brazilian influence is evident throughout this recording.

Lina Nyberg was born in Stockholm in 1970 and raised in an artistic home. She discovered jazz at age 14 and at 18 years of age Lina began singing with Swedish jazz stars such as Bernt Rosengren, Nisse Sandstrцm, Fredrik Norйn Band, and others. In 1990 Lina built her own first constellation "Lina Nyberg Kvintett" consisting of Per "Texas" Johansson, Esbjorn Svensson, Dan Berglund, and Mikel Ulfberg. Lina studied at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm from 1991 to 1993.

Lina and her quintet received the prestigious Swedish Grammis award for her CD "when the smile shines through" in 1995. "OPEN" released in 1998 and recorded with Palle Danielsson and Anders Persson, among others, was nominated for a Swedish Grammis and received rave reviews.

Over the years Lina Nyberg has collaborated with jazz musicians such as John Taylor, Dr. Dingo, Esbjorn Svensson, Anders Jormin, Rigmor Gustafsson, and Jeanette Lindstrom. She has toured in Scandinavia, parts of Europe, Canada and Brazil. In 1999 Lina toured Japan with Yasuhito Moris Scandinavian Connection.

With smooth delivery and relaxed phrasing, Nyberg sails through a lovely ballad that harkens back to another era. Listen Sweet is an unforgettable melody that you think you have heard somewhere before. Landaeus's piano compliments Nyberg's vocal stylings perfectly. Always comping behind her delicate voice as well as moving the melody along.

Sebastian Notini's percussion and brush work introduce the shuffle like rhythms of While Waiting, a rhythmic number with some gentle strumming from bassist Torbjorn Zetterberg. Zetterberg is one of Sweden's most promising bassists. His careful accompaniment under Nyberg's vocals gives this tune body and dimension.

Zetterberg and Nyberg serve up a gentle intro to this Kurt Weill classic. Covered by many vocalists over the years, Nyberg's arrangement of September Song is simple and to the point. Hanging on every syllable, we are treated to a brief but emotional rendition.

Having fun throughout, Nyberg sails on this original upbeat number. Rain Like Rivers gives us another chance to hear Landaeus's floating piano. Ever so effective. Stating the melody as well as taking a nice solo. Nyberg and Landaeus work well together.

Morning Star is a duet with Nyberg and Notini. Pulsating drumming and gentle singing offer up a contrast of styles that send the listener on a dreamlike trip.
