The music from Jerry Bock & Sheldon Harnick's; Fiorello!

The Oscar Peterson Trio

Los Angeles, CA, January, 1960

It has well deserved Oscar Peterson's attention too-a fact there melodically conspicuous. Peterson's Song Book recordings have confirmed that any theatrical score benefits from his instinctive and staccato touch. With regard to, and for, Fiorello! he demonstrates that the music, seemingly an inextricable part of the Jerome Weidman-George Abbott book - and married so effectively to the tricky lyrics - has a separable validity after all. Even so plotty a song as "Unfair (in which LaGuardia teches the girls on strike at the Nifth Shirt Waist Factory how to scream for satisfaction) or "Politics and Poker" has a melodic wonder. Whether going all-out and clapping hands for "Gentleman Jimmy" or opening up a "Little Tin Box" with caesuras and glissandi or working "On the Side of the Angels" with a supper-club piano, Oscar Peterson is delineating the values in Jerry Bock's music and re-creating the excitement of Fiorello!
