Valentin Silvestrov's Co. 1937 Dedication is not quite a violin concerto "Symphony for Violin and Orchestra," as it says in the program heading printed in the notes to this CD, is a more fitting description. As many times as I have listened to this work over the past several months, I still have not quite come to grips with it, but I find it utterly fascinating, and each time I listen to it with more familiar ears, I hear more and find more to appreciate. Truly, Dedication is one of the most compelling and spellbinding pieces of music I have heard in many years, and I am thrilled to have made such a wonderful musical discovery almost by chance - this is yet another of those CDs I resisted buying for a long time, picking it up at the store, reading the front and back cover, thinking I might like it, and then putting it back, afraid that I would find it really disappointing.

There are echoes of Mahler in this piece, hints and allusions to Mahler's musical universe, but never does Silvestrov seem to be merely imitating Mahler. Silvestrov has his own voice, and a mysterious but intense voice it is. Kremer must have worked incredibly hard to learn this music, but the effort has paid off. In his liner notes, Kremer offers his perspective on this piece, offering this observation: "The genre to which Dedication belongs could probably be described as that of a tribute to Romanticism , as a nostalgic attempt to awaken Romanticism to new life. Although such an effort seems to be as good as futile, Valentin nevertheless manages, on the edge of the impossible, not only to play with Romanticism but to feel it anew Following this magnificent 40-minute piece on this CD is the violin/piano sonata, Post Scripture, which seems to be a haunted echo of Dedication - a haunted echo of a haunted echo of a century ago, looking ahead to a new century. Both these works are works that ought to be heard by anyone with an appreciation for Mahler in particular or at least late-Romantic fin-de-siecle music in general. The sound is big, deep, and brooding, perfect for the music.
