Concerti Grossi (12), for 2 violins, strings & continuo (after Op. 5 Sonatas of Corelli)

The immediate question one asks about Francesco Geminiani's 12 Concerti grossi after Arcangelo Corelli's Op. 5 violin sonatas is "why?" Why would Geminiani follow up his enormously successful Op. 1 violin sonatas by publishing arrangements of someone else's music? Part of the answer is commercial; Geminiani was living in London, where Corelli was considered "the bread of life" for musicians, in one contemporary's words. Not many violinists in London besides Geminiani could play Corelli's Op. 5; versions for orchestra, playable by almost everyone, satisfied a market eager for Corelli concerti. But the primary impetus for these transcriptions, of course, was artistic, Geminiani wanted to honor his teacher and perhaps to provide his own commentary on Corelli's works through the very act of transcription. Indeed, these are not transcriptions in the normal sense, but could be termed re-imaginings for orchestra, with Geminiani's intelligence and sensitivity vital in the transformation. The first six concerti use the sonatas da chiesa (church sonatas) of Corelli's original set as their starting point, while the second six use the sonatas da camera (chamber sonatas). There are more obvious opportunities for Geminiani to shine in arranging the sonatas da chiesa, as they feature more counterpoint and busier partwriting. Geminiani displays particular imagination in the distribution of the parts, giving the solo violin line to combinations of the first and second violins, and sometimes even the violas, to create varied and pleasing orchestral textures. Corelli's fugues, in particular, sound completely natural in their new orchestral garb, as Geminiani perfectly judges the balance between concertino and ripenio and between low and high strings to bring out the exhilirating vigor of Corelli's writing. The second set of six concerti was much less successful commercially, and it is easy to assume that this is because the more homophonic sonatas da camera did not afford Geminiani the same opportunities to display his talents. However, Geminiani shows different skills with these arrangements, paying particular attention to the inner parts of the orchestra in creating new and appropriate textures. In some cases, he creates new lines which comment or expand on Corelli's original thoughts, to wonderful effect. These last six arrangements come to a rousing conclusion with Geminiani's version of the La Follia sonata; much revered in Europe as a dazzling solo violin showpiece, it is recast as an equally demanding test of a virtuoso baroque orchestra, with pointed, vigorous rhythms, slashing melodies, and hair-raisingly quick passages for every section of the orchestra, especially the concertino.

=====

Chiara Banchini's sensational recording of Corelli's op.V in the 1990s (on harmonia mundi) thus finds an echo in this new release with Ensemble 415, founded twenty years ago. 'For me, playing these sonatas again with the orchestra was a constant process of discovery. Geminiani embellishes them while still respecting his master's text. He has a double purpose: to pay tribute to Corelli, and to place his works within reach of amateur violinists (which is not the case with the original sonatas of opus V). Geminiani leaves the soloist freedom to embellish the text. We have opted for ornaments that come closer to the school of Geminiani himself than to that of Corelli. Among his many written works on music, Geminiani left us a magnificent Art of Playing on the Violin in which he goes into great detail about the ornamentation used by his school: we have followed him.' Chiara Banchini Ensemble 415 has undergone a renewal; the fusion between Chiara Banchini and her 'new Arcadians' has produced 'performances as respectful of text and style as they are original and exciting in conception' (Le Progres).
