Russian National Orchestra

Though you have Slavonic musicians here playing Slavonic music, the results are not quite traditionally Czech, with refinement and crispness of ensemble the keynotes rather than earthier qualities. Mikhail Pletnev and the Russian National Orchestra add to their store of fine recordings for DG with this distinctive and highly enjoyable version of Dvorak's colourful dances. These are, after all, works which for all their lack of pretension are open to all kinds of subtleties of interpretation, with different views totally valid. So the Czech-born George Szell takes a fiercer, more hard-hitting view with his highly-polished American orchestra, while Andre Previn and the Vienna Philharmonic in the most recent new version from Philips relate these pieces to the world of Johann Strauss, with Czech and Viennese polkas identified as first cousins and with triple-time dances given a warm Viennese lilt, almost like waltzes.

At times with such refined playing one might even dub Pletnev's approach as Mozartian, with elegance a regular element, and with even the wildest furiants kept under control. The crispness of ensemble and clarity of texture give a sharpness of focus to prevent any idea that these are performances lacking in bite, though after the Previn one might well feel they are on the cool side, with the extrovert joy of the music rather underplayed. So the Dumka lament of the second dance is lighter and cooler than with Previn, charming rather than warmly expressive. Dynamic contrasts are sharply defined through all the dances, and Pletnev and his Russian players consistently make one marvel at the beauty of the instrumentation. Like the Previn version, but in a totally different way, this is a disc to give a fresh view of well-loved music.'
