Choir of King's College (Cambridge), English Chamber Orchestra

Not one of the more successful discs in EMI's Encore reissue series, this release pairs a 1982 performance of the four Coronation Anthems by the Choir of King's College, Cambridge with a 1965 Dixit Dominus by the same group, accompanied in each case by the English Chamber Orchestra. Handel's Coronation Anthems were all written for the same event, the coronation of King George II in 1727. This was a pull-out-all-the-stops, pomp-and-circumstance event; contemporary accounts speak of more than 200 musicians and singers being involved. Even if that number is exaggerated, something more than this modest, decorous reading by Sir Philip Ledger is clearly demanded. The men and boys of the Choir of King's College are a precise ensemble as ever, and it's hard to ruin Zadok the Priest if you get its uncanny timing right. But the boy trebles and altos in the solo parts have entirely the wrong effect. These parts would have been sung by castrati, and they are all about power. Handel's early Dixit Dominus fares better at the hand of Sir David Willcocks and features the all-star (or at least mostly star) soloist group of Teresa Zylis-Gara, Dame Janet Baker, Martin Lane, Robert Tear, and John Shirley-Quirk. The juxtaposition between these singers and the choir is rather jarring, however. With all the great versions of these Handel masterworks out there, ranging from full-orchestra treatments to muscular historical-instrument readings, only extreme Anglophiles should settle for this one, even at its budget price.
