In a time when Bach cantatas are recorded in big bunches, t's a pleasure to find a single-disc grouping, beautifully selected and performed. Weinen, Klagen... (Weeping, Lamentation...) presents three cantatas with a common theme and plan. The theme of lamentation in the face of suffering and death transmuted into the comfort of Christ is a common enough one in the world of Bach's cantatas, but these three works - Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, BWV 12 (Weeping, lamentation, worry, fear), Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir, BWV 38 (In deep distress I call to thee), and Die Elenden sollen essen, BWV 75 (The miserable shall eat) - are all important works, written for occasions Bach himself considered significant. Each comes from a different stage of Bach's career, and the listener thus is afforded a splendidly focused insight into the inexhaustible freedom of Bach's imagination even when it was operating within a strict set of formal constraints and conventions.

Each of these cantatas, broadly speaking, begins with a chorus of gloom and doom, represented in some way by an implacable mountain of old-style polyphony. The rejoinder of faith is then delivered by soloists and soloist groups in warm, more operatic, more personal music. Yet Bach fills in each part of the pattern with very different music in each case. For the listener who has perhaps heard a few of the famous Bach cantatas and wants to understand more about the musical language Bach spoke every Sunday in church in Leipzig and Weimar, this recording is ideal.

Those already familiar with these works will be impressed as well. Conductor Philippe Herreweghe is an impressive Bach interpreter, rooted in the lyrical French approach to the composer's choral music. His Collegium Vocale Ghent, using historically appropriate instruments but never making a big to-do about it, is a supple instrument in his hands, and the four soloists are perfectly suited to this repertory. Deserving of special notice are the passionate vocal flights of countertenor Daniel Taylor, taking Bach's original alto part. If you don't know where to start with Bach's hundreds of cantatas, try this recording. Bach enthusiasts will receive further confirmation of Herreweghe's current exalted status.
