Jerry Bergonzi has always been strongly influenced by the sound of John Coltrane circa 1960-63. But despite the derivative nature of his style, this is an enjoyable CD. Bergonzi really has 'Trane down, and he tears into the pieces with all of his fire and creativity. "If I Were a Bell," and normally a lighthearted song, is here quite dissonant, the tenorman's "McCoy" has a melody reminiscent of "Bessie's Blues" and a groove closer to "Dahomey's Dance," and "Night and Day" was altered to accommodate the chord changes of "Giant Steps." Even Bergonzi's originals sound to certain degrees like they are taken from the John Coltrane songbook. The rhythm section (pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Dave Santoro and drummer Adam Nussbaum) is fine in support (McCoy Tyner is one of Calderazzo's influences), but this is essentially Bergonzi's show.
