Komitas (Soghomon Soghomonian, 1869-1935) is being considered as a legend and national saint in Armenian history, and his name is dear to the Armenian nation. He shared the same fate of his people during the tragic Genocide of 1915 during the reign of the Osman Turks, Though his life was miraculously spared, the scars of this Armenian national tragedy remained on his heart, and the ghosts of his slaughtered compatriots continued to haunt him the rest of his life. His madness stalked him for 20 years and he spent most of this time in asylums in France. He died in Paris and was buried in his motherland, Armenia in 1936. Few people have been able to accomplish what Komitas achieved during his tormented lifetime. Despite his suffering, he was able to experience the joy of musical creation, and he left his legacy to the Armenian nation as a founder of the Armenian National School for Musical Composition.

Komitas tasted the bitterness of childhood as an orphan from an early age. He studied at the Gevorkian Seminary at Etchmiadzin where he mastered the Armenian language and Armenian spiritual music. At the age of 25 he was ordained a celibate friar, and he took the name of Catholicos Komitas, the namesake of an Armenian poet and musician of the VII century. In one year's time at Etchmiadzin, he became a vardapet, or celibate priest of the Armenian Episcopal Church.

Later, while continuing his education in Berlin, at the private conservatory of Richard Schmidt, he studied music and compostition under such masters as Otto Flascher, Heinrich Bellerman, and Schmidt himself. While taking advantage of the best musical instruction available, Komitas established contacts with Europe's leading musicians and became one of the founding members of the European Musical Association. His contributions to the Association's Berlin Branch were considerable, and he presented lecture-concerts that offered a methodical introduction to the unique and special qualities of Armenian music previously unknown by his European audiences.

Komitas was a composer, musicologist, field ethno-musicologist, singer, choir conductor, and teacher. However, it is difficult to say in which field his versatile and prolific work was most influential. The fruits of his labor as a composer and musicologist are being considered asclassical works of genius. Komitas was able to synthesize the fret peculiarities of the uno voce method of composition with the European polyphony, and thereby created a practical, yet professional Armenian musical language.

Since childhood, Komitas appreciated Armenian musical folklore, and he gathered and organized more than four thousand folksongs and instrumental melodies. Unfortunately, only 1,200 originals of these songs remain; however, what has been preserved and professionally catalogued by the brilliant ethno-musicologist and musician are further legacies of his talent and these works constitute national treasures of Armenian musical folklore.

Komitas possessed a beautiful baritone with a broad range, and he not only attained the level of a consummate performer but assumed the role of benefactor as the founder of the Armenian National Vocal School. Successful Armenian voice students heed his "ten commandments" to this day.

Like his senior contemporaries, such as Christapor Kara-Murza and Makar Yekmalian, Komitas instructed choral music. He worked as a voice teacher and conducted choir performances of Armenian folk songs which he compiled and adapted. These choir compositions are now universally recognised as masterpieces of the genre.

Komitas taught his students the fundamentals of music theory but also imparted to them the basics of ethno-musicology. He also taught them to appreciate the cultural aspects of music and the spiritual rewards of music scholarship and field research. Among his students were Spiridon Melikian, Hakob Harutiunian, Mihran Tumatchan. They were musicians, whose contributions to Armenian folklore have left their mark on Armenian history.

This record is extrodinary and special in its musical quality to Armenians and music enthusiasts as well, because it contains the original voice track of Komitas. Komitas performs songs which he adapted and refined for his contemporary listeners, but the recordings on this compact disc-remain for posterity to enjoy. One of Komitas' original students, a distinguished tenor named Armenak Shahmuradian, is accompanied by his teacher on the piano. Like Komitas, Shahmuradian used to live in Paris and studied at the Paris conservatory, and performed at the Paris "Grand Opera." Though tutored in the European professional style, Shahmuradian's renditions follow the rhythm, nuance, and emotions of Armenian national songs.

The recordings presented in this collection offer a wide range of musical genres. Agricultural labor songs, such as Gutanyerg and Kali Yerg, bear the spirit and text of ancient Armenian folk traditions.

Another student of Komit was, Vahan Der Arakelian, who as a prominent Armenian tenor joines his teacher in a vocal duet in this selection. This disk conteins masterpieces of the lyrical genre as Garun a, Hovarek, Krunk and Antuni which convey themes of exile and nomadic wandering. This collection also includes Mokats Mirza, a rare ballad, and the lyric poem Havik, both songs have been descended from medieval folk tales.

While refining Armenian songs, Komitas often juxtaposed melodies of different styles, creating lovely scenes of popular life, using englarged and accomplished forms, as present in Alagyaz and Khnki tsar, Kujn ara and Gna, Gna. Three spritual songs recorded by Komitas, Hishestsuki Gisherin* Cristos Pataragyal and Urakh ler are also presenteed in this compilation.

The selections on this disk were recorded in Paris in 1912, and there is marginal distortion due to age of the soundtracks; however, thanks to modern computers and sound technology, noise reduction filtering and digital remastering have assisted in making the quality of the music excellent. We thank "Anima Vox" for their help in remastering these original recordings. They were able to retain the natural beauty and richness of the musical timbres, and we are greatful for their ability to sustain the integrity of an important Armenian treasure.
