========= from the cover ==========

Alexander Borodin (whose 150th birthday was celebrated in 1983) was member of the so-called group "The Five". It was a group of young composers who were dedicated to the development of nationalistically orientated composing.

Borodin composed his first piece of music at the age of nine. He studied music and medicine simultaneously (Borodin received his M.D. in Petersburg in 1856) and became a professor at the Petersburg University.

The progressive way of composing that "The Five" (Balakirew, Borodin, Cui, Mussorgsky and Rimsky-Korssakow) documented in their compositions was dominated by elements of nationalistic folk music and dance rhythms. This was in contrast to the style of composing of those before them who were greatly influenced by the Italian. German, and French music of the 18th century. These new elements were not only evident in Borodin's three Symphonies, in "The Steppes of Central Asia" and in his opera "Prince Igor" but also in his opus for string quartet. In addition to the quartets on this recording Borodin has also written two other pieces for string quartet, one movement of "Les Vendredis" and the so-called B-La-F-Quartet" (i. e. Beljajew. 1886).

All these pieces radiate a particular freshness of melody, rhythm, harmonic structure, and color. Borodin utilizes typical Russian compositional techniques such as slight changes in repeated melodies, thus creating new color schemes.

During his travels through Italy. Germany, and Switzerland, Borodin made a very intensive study of the works of Beethoven and Robert Schumann. As a result the listener can detect the virtuoso characteristic elements and the fiery unison passages coupled, on the other hand, with lyrical and melodious phrases.
