Stanisiav Bunin

"For me, music began with Mozart. My mother, a pianist, graduated from the Moscow Conservatoire (from Heinrich Neuhaus' class) and often listened to a recording of Mozart's A major Concerto, conducted by Herbert von Karajan. This was the first music I listened to and was able to comprehend. (I can say nothing about the performing skill because I was only four years old.) I was greatly impressed; it was impossible to compare the experience with anything else. At that time, I started to try the piano, and a little later began to study music seriously; first with my mother and later at the Central Music School in Moscow, where I studied for 11 years under Elena Richter. So Mozart was my first and, I think, my eternal love."

-Stanisiav Bunin

In 1983, the 17-year-old Bunin performed Mozart's Concerto No.23 at the International Marguerite Long Competition in Paris. Le Figaro wrojte: 'His interpretations were glorious moments, touching to perfection'. Stanisiav Bunin was awarded the Grand Prix and labelled the 'most interesting musical individual' by the French press. Two years later, Bunin confirmed his high artistic reputation by winning the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. Again, the press wrote of the unique pianistic features of this artist; they remarked on the originality and richness of his instrumentation, the timbres produced in the best traditions of the Russian pianistic school (Bunin continued his studies at the Moscow Conservatoire with professor Sergei Dorensky), the elegance and altogether fine style of expression. This mastery (together with a natural and personal sense of music) is the essence of Stanisiav Bunin's Chopin interpretations.
