Winterreise, song cycle for voice & piano, D. 911 (Op. 89)

World Premiere Recording.

Recorded August 1-5, 1994, at the Sendesaal of the Hessian Radio.

For some of us who have loved and lost, there are fates worse than death. Madness - madness is a fate worse than death. To live, but not to know, or to be, who we are. To live, without love, without hope, without death, without knowing even who we are. Madness. Schubert knew this, knew this to the depths of his soul and feared it. And out of his fear he wrote the greatest monument to love lost, to death lost, to madness found. He wrote &Die Winterreise, the most hopeless art work ever conceived by the despairing mind of man. Speaking of madness, is Hans Zender nuts? A "composed interpretation"? Of Schubert's &Winterreise? Scored for a chamber orchestra that includes accordion, harmonica, and wind machine? Opening with a nearly seven-minute - that's twice as long as usual - "Good Night," and ending with a nearly ten-minute - that's nearly triple-length - "Hurdy-Gurdy Man"? Zender has a reputation as a contemporary composer and as a conductor, a sort of Germanic Pierre Boulez. What is Zender doing to Schubert's bleak masterpiece? He's composing it as he hears it: as a work that draws on folksong, as a work of its Biedermeyer string-quartet-in-a-drawing-room time, as a work that anticipates the Weltschmerzmusik of Wolf and Mahler, the angst-ridden expressionism of Schoenberg, and even the stark simplicity of Weill. All of this can be heard in Zender's interpretation. Sometimes it works, as in the rattling and knocking of "Good Night." Sometimes it doesn't; consider the wind machines of "The Stormy Morning." When it works, it's provocative. When it doesn't, it's silly.
