PIANO NIGHTS is Armik's first ever-piano project. It is a deft treatment of ten songs that spotlight his ability to devise amazing piano melodies to accompany his internationally" renowned guitar virtuosity. Armik has rapidly become one of the most important guitarists on the Nuevo flamenco scene. With PIANO NIGHTS, he makes the basic point that there are essentially two ways to render his Nuevo flamenco essence - as up-tempo numbers for dancing or as romantic ballads highlighted by inspired improvisations.
The title track PIANO NIGHTS is a Bossa Nova that has the feeling of choreography by being both lyrical and catering to the dancing impulse. The song employs both melodic and harmonic variations that Armik has successfully arranged to convey the feeling of a couple being on the dance floor. The way he makes use of the different string and piano chord textures to advance the song's story is remarkable. "Afternoon In Venice," is strongly rhythmic with its melody posited against a very catchy Bolero/Cha Cha backdrop.
The pianist and guitarist engage in a musical conversation that involves the listener in such a way that every tone is a colorful depiction of the ambience one would hear and see in this lovely Italian city. "Fairytale Moon," incorporates the polyrhythmic and astute harmonic backgrounds of the piano and the guitar to evoke serene passion. By slightly altering the chords, Armik is able to perfect the ideal of telling stories in a sentimental musical setting. Here, the pianist colors the passion and virtuosity of Armik's guitar melodies with his clever sketches of piano magic. "Flames of Passion,"combines attributes of both the love song and the dance number. Armik layers the moods with exceptional solos and a memorable guitar melody. His flair for fusing emotional melodic fragments with intense rhythmic, up-tempo time signatures is not only stunning but treats the listener to a song within a song.
Armik is among the rare instrumentalists that make vivid use of harmonies, rhythms and melodies to tell superb musical stories without a lyric. With PIANO NIGHTS, he adds his name to the short list of Nuevo flamenco guitarists and composers who have put their passion and virtuosity on display with a pianist that can masterfully interpret his sophisticated compositions.
