========= from the cover ==========

Two composers of the seventeenth century number among the "discoveries" made during the period between the World Wars: Claudio Monteverdi and Heinrich Schutz. Both enjoyed highest esteem during their lifetimes. Their compositions, however, were later forgotten. Monteverdi was Kapellmeister at St. Mark's Church in Venice, Schutz Court Kapellmeister to the Elector of Saxony. Both achieved their first successes as composers with madrigals, and both wrote church music. Yet while Monteverdi's chief significance lies in the field of opera. Schutz was one of the most ingenious composers of sacred music, in which capacity he was considered in the seventeenth centuny the "allerbeste teulsche Korn-ponist" (best German composer of all). From 1609 to 1613, Heinrich Schutz (1585 - 1672) was a pupil of Giovanni Gabrleli, the Cathedral Conductor at St. Mark's In Venice. It rs no wonder that church music bears the influence of Gabrieli's style. This is shown in his "Psalmon Davids" (Psalms of David) that were published as Op. 2 in Dresden in 1619: under the title "Psal-men Davids sampt etlichen Moteten und Concerten mlt 8 und mehr Stimmen nebst anderen zweyen Capellen" (The Psalms of David together with Several Motets and Concertos wlth 8 and More Voices PIus Two Other Orchestras). The collection contains twenty-six polyphonic settings of psalm texts.

Stylistically, SchQtz inspiration comes from Italian masters of the late Renaissance and early Baroque. For example, he took over the concertato style of the now Italian music, the monodic principle, the thoroughbass and poly choral scoring. The primary goal governing his style was the dramatic expression of biblical texts drawn from Luther's Bible.

Four compositions have been selected from Schutz' Psal-men Davids for presentation on this record.

These four psalms settings juxtapose two mixed choirs (instrumental accompaniment: thoroughbass). Psalm 121 makes use of a solo quartet in addition to the double choirs, and the composition begins with a soprano solo Herr, wenn ich nur dich habe (Lord, if only I have Thee) (SWV 280) is part of the "Muslkalische Exequlen" (Exe qules) (SWV 279 - 281} that Schutz composed for Prince Heinrich Posthumus von Reuss. The "Exequien" were performed both while the Prince was alive and when he was buried on February 4,1636. The text is based on Psalm 73 which Prince Heinrich had wished as the basis for his funeral sermon,

Around 1624, Schutz composed the Dialogo per la pascua ("Easier Dialogue", the first line of which reads: "Weib, was weinest du?" (Woman, why do you weep?). {SWV 443} that has come down to us only as a fragment. It is written for two sop'anos, alto and tenor, with the text based on the Book of St. John.

The rnolet Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben (I am the Resurrection and the Life) (SWV 464) was composed for two four-part choirs - probably for a funeral service lhat took place during the Easter period. The text is drawn basically from the Book of St. John. Wohl denen, die ohne Tadet leben (Blessed are they that live without fault) (SWV 482) is the first part of a cycle which was written in 1671, was dedicated to Prince-Elector Johann Georg II. and was one of Schutz' last works. The complete work from which "Wohi denen" is drawn bears the title "Konigs und Propheten Davids 119. Psalm in Eilf Stocken" (The 119th Psalm of King-and-Prophet David, In Eleven Pieces).
