The music of Astor Piazzolla

Inspired by a general love of the tango, and more specifically the tango of Astor Piazzolla, on the part of Yo-Yo Ma, the Soul of the Tango album is a masterful work of the nuevo tango, played by Ma's cello and many of Piazzolla's former associates. Piazzolla's old guitarists Sergio and Odair Assad even showed up to work on a pair of tracks arranged by Sergio: the Tango Suite (consisting of Andante and Allegro). The sheer beauty of one of Piazzolla's tangos is generally enough to warrant the purchase of an album involving them. An album such as this one, where all of the songs (save one: Tango Remembrances, where Ma plays along with outtakes from Piazzolla's recording of The Rough Dancer and the Cyclical Night album) are compositions by Piazzolla is even better. Add to this the masterful playing of Ma, and the surprising facility in which the cello fits into the tango, and you've got what could become a classic album, if only it weren't on the classical label from Sony. The album begins with Libertango, a composition from Piazzolla's first album that became the theme song for the movie The Tango Lesson. Following is the pair of tracks in the Tango Suite from Sergio Assad. Then comes Sur: Regreso al Amor, a softer work, though with some definite virtuosity displayed. Le Grand Tango is an eleven minute tour de force in the tango, and Fugata is a tango written under the guidelines of a classical fugue. The next work is the aforementioned Tango Remembrances, which is a particularly nice work, probably due to the appearance of Piazzolla's own playing. Mumuki is a more complicated composition, and Tres Minutos con la Realidad is a choppier, peppier work. Milonga del Angel is a seemingly sentimental work that shows off Piazzolla's ability to express the emotions of a song perfectly and purely. To finish the album, Ma presents Cafй 1930, a rather slow paced work, but again, as in Milonga del Angel, expresses emotion very fully in its nostalgia. Overall, the album is a stunning work of art, and even those that may not have heard of Piazzolla could easily be lured to his music via this single album.

Nights of Moonlight and Tango

Suddenly it hit me. The music caught me like a fever that wouldn't let go,"Yo-Yo Ma told me in Buenos Aires after the recording sessions were over. "And what could be better than playing Piazzolla's music with his friends and longtime colleagues - people whose playing I have admired on recordings - artists like Marconi, Malvicino, Console, Gandini, Castro-Neves and Calandrelli? And when Kathy Stott played the Tres minutes con la realidad people whispered, 'She must be Argentinean. 'Malvicino said, 'In forty years, this is the first time I hear all the notes.'"

But tango is more than just notes, and it is their projection of the tango's special qualities of freedom, passion, and ecstasy that make these performers so special. For a native of Buenos Aires, a portena, such as myself, tango is the backdrop for the city; it is dance, music, poetry, song and gesture, ethos and a philosophy of life. As Yo-Yo himself said, "Tango is not just about dancing. It is a music of deep undercurrents. Because of what Argentina went through as a country, tango has become the soul of Argentina. Music is always one way people can speak when they aren't allowed to express themselves otherwise. And Piazzolla's tangos have the great strength of true voice."

From its lowly beginnings, the tango's essence has changed from epoch to epoch. Early in the century Parisians' acceptance of this morally suspect lower-class dance transformed its image, and tango was accepted by the upper class in Buenos Aires. Over lime, the dance waned in popularity: The city changed, the dance floor gave way to concert cafes, and the barrio was left behind. Since 1955, it has been Astor Piazzolla who has given the form new vitality. And what was once the exclusive property of tango musicians, today seduces renowned artists of all musical genres.

Yo-Yo: "Unlike other tangos, Piazzolla's tangos you listen to. One of my great regrets is never having met Piazzolla. But coming to Buenos Aires and working with his fellow musicians has brought me closer. Now, through the miracle of modern technology, Piazzolla and I have gotten even closer: Using some outtakes of Piazzolla playing the bandoneon, Jorge Calandrelli composed music for me, so that in the piece called 'Tango Remembrances' we arc playing together. Now, I feel I have a real sense of how Piazzolla breathed. And all that is in this recording." Indeed, and as the composer Jorge Calandrelli, arranger for this album, said to me: "Astor would be thrilled!"

The word "tango" conjures up images of Buenos Aires, of a dimly-lit dance floor, the smoke of a cigarette curling up into the air, a beautiful woman in the arms of a man, surrendering to a rhythm that is at once love and dream, pain and reality. "I love Buenos Aires - the nostalgia that always somehow seems to look forward, a society on the verge of a new identity," says Yo-Yo. And so long as there are musicians like Yo-Yo and so long as a single porteno remains, there will be nights filled with moonlight and tango.
