Chucho Valdes & The Afro-Cuban Messengers

All Music Guide

========= from the cover ==========

Border Free is an album which clearly distinguishes itself from Chucho's Steps. On it, we have tried to combine compatible styles with Afro-Cuban roots and in doing so, we were lucky enough to work with the great Branford Marsalis, a musician who brought flavor and power to our material.

Santa Cruz, set to a flamenco melody, is dedicated to the guitarist Canario (Santi). It was composed in 1986 for the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria carnival.

Abdel, with its rhythmic roots and scales similar to those used in Arab music, is dedicated to a great Moroccan musician.

Afro-Comanche tells the story of a number of Comanche Indians who were deported to the Eastern parts of Cuba during the 19th century. It's entitled Afro-Comanche since in Cuba, the Indians met Afro-Cubans and founded families with them. From this mixed heritage were born children known as Afro-Comanches.

Bebo is a reference to my father and his way of composing and playing music. It's a tribute full of tenderness and respect.

Pilar is for my dearly departed mother to whom I owe so much. She loved Bach's preludes and fugues and also the piece Blue in Green by Miles Davis, a few elements of which I included in this piece in her honour.

Caridad Amaro is for my grandmother. She liked me to play Rachmaninov's concerto for her and at the end of this piece, I play my own version of one part of that concerto.

Tab? is a tribute to Margarita Lecuona who composed, among other pieces, the classic Babal? Ay?, and who is the sister of Ernesto Lecuona, the man acknowledged to be the best Cuban pianist in history.

Conga-Danza is dedicated to Mar?a Cervantes, the daughter of the great Ignacio Cervantes, one of the fathers of Cuban pianists and the composer of 36 Cuban Dances.

I hope you will enjoy this collection.
