========= from the cover ==========

"When Don Byas came to France with Don Red man's orchestra in '46, he was already basking in glory. Count Basie hired him to take Lester Young's place in '41. He was part of Dizzy Gillespie's first quintet in '44. A year later, he cut the ultimate version of Laura. A few months before coming to Paris, he recorded Night in Tunisia with one of Dizzy's first small ensembles. Don would live in France for about ten years, often frequenting the Vogue studio on rue Jouvenet, in particular with the pianists Mary Lou Williams and Beryl Booker. Mary Lou came to Europe in '52. Few musicians evolved like she did. She was Andy Kirk's pianist from '29 to '31, playing stride and boogie woogie equally well. She wrote arrangements for Benny Goodman and Duke Ellington, including Trumpets No End for the latter. She then developed a keen interest in Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell and Dizzy Gillespie, for whom she wrote In The Land Of Oo-Bla-Dee. In Paris in '54, her playing showed an alternation of modern melodic lines and block chords, one of the trademarks of jazz piano at the time. The Parisian public first saw Beryl Booker in '54 during the Jazz Club USA tour organized by Leonard Feather. Her trio opened concerts that included the Red Norvo Trio with Jimmy Raney the Buddy de Franco Quartet, and Billie Holiday. Beryl also played piano in the Slam Stewart Trio and accompanied Dinah Washington. Don Byas - Mary Lou Williams and Don Byas - Beryl Booker, four tracks which were originally put together on an EP, have been added to the two 25-cm LP reissues on this CD; on the four tracks Don enjoys the outstanding accompaniment of Michelot, Vander, Sadi, Bennett, and Paraboschi. Just One Of Those Things is a shining example of Don Carlos Byas' virtuosity and harmonic knowledge -the qualities that made him Dizzy Gillespie's partner.

In '47, Charles Delaunay asked me to go to Toulouse with Don Byas, with the bass player Guy de Fatto and with no drummer! During our trip, Don told us that it had always been his goal to adapt Tatum's style for the saxophone. Coleman Hawkins also modified his style after hearing Tatum for the first time. On another occasion, Don told me that in his opinion there were three basic tenor saxophone styles: Hawkins', tester's, and his own."
