The Handel Keyboard Suites

An Appraisal

Although George Frideric Handel is one of the two most famous and most often performed baroque composers, much of his keyboard solo music is basically unknown to our ears.

I think there are a few reasons for this, but none of them legitimate. One is that we think of Handel as an orchestral, choral, or chamber ensemble writer. Another, is that because of his popularity in the "big scale" works, it's hard to hear the quality of the solo pieces. A third reason is that these solo pieces are, in general, non-dramatic and non-virtue sic.

There are other great baroque composers who shared the same fate (and for similiar reasons): Purcell and Telemann have written beautiful harpsichord music that we almost never hear, while Scarlatti steals the solo stage, partly by sheer quantity of material.

When audiences decide what they think someone is great at, they tend to undervalue other things that same someone does. One example in the Romantic era is Chopin, whose concert! are looked at as examples of bad orchestration rather than beautiful musical ideas because we "know" Chopin mastered the solo piano genre.

What I think about this tendency is obvious: I think it is too bad, because there is still a wealth of untapped music waiting to be played.

When we do hear these Handel pieces, we almost always hear the same few. These have numerous variations on a theme and sound more technically hard sometimes (although they aren't).

But there are others in this collection that are far more beautiful and almost unheard. These have an amazing heart, a warmth and richness even in the simplest movements that in my opinion has been unsurpassed in this period of history.

And these selected suites are what I choose to present to you now.

This lyrical warmth and textural richness couched in simplicity makes the choice of piano appropriate even though the instrument did not exist in Handel's day. Further, I think the piano can "bring out" those'elements in such a way as to make even more surprising the fact that we rarely hear these pieces.

There was a long history to this project. In fact, nearly twenty years ago I began to record them, but decided to wait till a more opportune time for my energies.

I have studied several editions in preparing this recording, and chose from each depending on musicality and authenticity, although I always began with the least-tampered-with edition available for each suite. In other words, I strove for correctness both musicologically and musically.

The order is intentional and I came to this sequence after careful consideration. The entire CD can be played straight through without loss of attention although, of course, the suites were not intended for this purpose. Since most people do seem to let the CD play through, I felt this was a necessary consideration. (Interestingly, though, we are hearing, almost literally, late to early in the chronology).

Handel was a keyboardist, and his keyboard works should occupy a higher position in our awareness than they do. I hope this recording can do some good in this direction.
