Oh, Black-eyed Girl

Songs from Georgia

Chonguri: four-stringed, long-necked lute with pear-shaped body, usually played by plucking the strings. It originates from Western Georgia. It has one short string, which produces a steady high drone. In an old Georgian song it reads: "I put strings on the chonguri and then tuned it. Chonguri, that's Georgia, and the strings are the people..". The chonguri is used as solo instrument or to accompany the songs, like the panduri and the chuniri.

Salamuri: shepherd's flute with a clear and very soft sound, producing elaborate melodies. It generally has seven finger-holes at the front and one at the back. The sound can change by varying the force of blowing: from tender and soft to loud and penetrating. Sometimes two salamuris (in different tuning) are played simultaneously by one musician.

Panduri: three-stringed fretted lute witri oval body, it is played by strumming or plucking and originates from Eastern Georgia.

Svirel: shawm, also known as zurna.

Gudastviri: a bagpipe with bellows (guda), small tube, and double chanter (stviri), which can be played in two voices, Traditionally the gudaslviri is associated with professional ravelling musicians-mestvire-who perform heroic songs and shairi (popular verse), The mestvire had an important function as social commentators and were welcome guests everywhere.

Duduki: flute, made of pear-tree, with thick double reed. The reed is encircled by an oval ring, made of rush, that can slip up and down to adapt the tuning, The sound resembles a shawm.

Doli: percussion instrument; cylindrical drum with two membranes (like the Armenian dool), played with stick or hand.

Chuniri: three-stringed bowed lute, originating from Western Georgia.

Guitar: six-stringed plucked instrument; recently introduced into Georgian folkmusic.
