When bossa nova seemed in danger of being written off as a fad, this classic album came out and made bossa nova a permanent part of music. The combination of tenor saxophonist Stan Getz, pianist/composer Antonio Carlos Jobim and guitarist/singer Joao Gilberto had universal appeal (they all worked so beautifully together), and the last-minute addition of Astrud Gilberto, who had never sung professionally before, to "The Girl from Ipanema" made the record a huge hit. The 1997 CD reissue, which also includes such memorable numbers and future standards as "Desafinado," "Corcovado (Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars)" and "So Danco Samba," adds the shortened 45 versions of "Ipanema" and "Corcovado" to the original program. This music has been reissued many times and belongs in everyone's collection.
