     Richard Davis

Born: Apr 15, 1930 in Chicago, IL
Genres: Jazz
Styles: Hard Bop, Post-Bop
Instruments: Bass

One of the most technically skilled of all acoustic bassists, Richard Davis has played in symphony orchestras but fortunately for jazz listeners, has spent much of his career in the jazz world. His early jazz jobs included stints with Ahmad Jamal (1953-1954), Don Shirley (1954-1955), and Sarah Vaughan (1957-1960). In addition to his symphony work in the 1960s (including for Stravinsky), Davis was a major asset on recordings by Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Andrew Hill, Ben Webster, Stan Getz, Earl Hines, Hank Jones, and Billy Cobham; in addition, he was a regular member of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra during 1966-1972. In 1977, he became an educator at the University of Wisconsin. Richard Davis' infrequent albums as a leader include dates for MPS, Muse, Flying Dutchman, Galaxy, Hep, and Sweet Basil (1990).
