     Arianna Savall

Born in Basel, Switzerland in 1972, into the heart of a family of Catalan musicians, Arianna Savall, after an initial stage of general and musical education, began to study classical harp at the age of ten, and after returning to Barcelona, continued under the direction of Magdalena Barrera. She concurrently began to study voice at the Conservatory of Terrassa with Mara Dolores Aldea in 1993. She was awarded her professional qualification in harp from the Conservatory of Terrassa in 1996, and that of voice in 2000. In 1992, she began studies in historical performance with Rolf Lislevand at the Conservatory of Toulouse (France), and took several courses under the tutorship of Andrew Lawrence-King and Hopkinson Smith, as well as that of her parents, Montserrat Figueras and Jordi Savall.

Arianna returned to Switzerland in 1996 in order to continue to study voice with Kurt Widmer and harp at the Scola Cantorum Basiliensis, where she studied mediaeval music with Dominique Vellart, undertaking an "opera studium" under the direction of Carlos Harmuch for three years. In 2000, she gave a harp "Abschlusskonzert" and sang in the Opera Seria (Vienna 1769: Florian Leopold Gassman) at the Theater Basel. In 2001, she completed her studies in voice at the Scola Cantorum Basiliensis with a recital (Abschlusskonzert).

Since 1997, she has taken part in concerts and recordings with Hesprion XXI, La Capella Reial de Catalunya, Malapunica, Ricercar Consort and Il Desiderio, among other early music groups, performing with them throughout Europe, the United States, South America, Australia, New Zealand and Israel. She has taken part in a range of recordings, most importantly: Tonos Humanos by Jos Marn, La Folia, Dispora Sefard, Carlos V: La Cancin del Emperador, Ostinato, Ninna Nanna (Alia Vox), Helas Avril by Mateo de Perrugia (Erato), Alfabeto by Rolf Lislevand (Nave). As a soloist she has given a number of recitals throughout Catalonia (Festival La Caixa 2001, Festival de Msica Viva in Vic, L'Oda and Juventuts Musicals de Catalunya) in which she sings and accompanies herself on the harp with a repertoire that runs from the medieval to the baroque periods and also includes her own compositions.

Together with some singer friends, she has founded the a cappella group "Capella Fantasiant", with which she has given several concerts in Switzerland. Alongside all this, she has also performed contemporary music, based on ancient Greek texts, by the Swiss composer Conrad Steinmann.

He made her operatic debut with her participation in Claudio Monteverdi's L'Orfeo in the role of Euridice at the Beaune Festival de Musique Ancienne (July 2000), in Metz (January 2001) and at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona in February 2002. Also in February 2002, she played the role of Carilda in the opera Arianna, a "pasticcio" by Handel, at the Scala theatre in Basle. In May 2002, she took part as a solo singer and instrumentalist in the opera Sueos y Folas in Salamanca. In January 2001, she sang Celos an del ayre matan, an opera by Juan Hidalgo, in Barcelona and at the Vienna Konzerthaus.

Her upcoming projects include: the release of the record Sopra la Rosa (Mirare), conducted by Philippe Pierlot (Ricercar Consort), on which she performs certain Italian cantatas for the first time and which was launched at Les Folles Journes de Nantes 2003; and the release of Bella Terra (Alia Vox), her first solo record, on which Arianna Savall performs her own musical settings of Catalan, Spanish and Arabic poems, a record which was launched with a concert in Cannes at the latest Midem (January 2003).
