     Masashi Honma

Masashi Honma (oboe)

Masashi Honma entered the Toyo (now Tokyo) College of Music in 1966, studying under Yoshio Umehara. In 1968 he entered the Toho Gakuen School of Music, where he studied the oboe under Seizo Suzuki. He joined the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra after graduation in 1972. In 1976 he travelled to Holland to study at the Royal Conservatoire of Music in The Hague as a scholarship student sponsored by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. While in Holland he studied baroque oboe with Bruce Haynes and ensemble performance with Sigiswald Kuijken as well as participating in recordings with the Danzi Quintet. He is a member of the Hotteterre Ensemble, a Japanese ensemble specialising in the performance of early music on period instruments. He has taken part in frequent performances in Europe as a member of Frans Bruggen's Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century. Masashi Honma is currently a lecturer at the Toho Gakuen School of Music and since 1986 has been principal oboist of the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra.
