Born in Seville, he studied classical guitar with America Martinez in the Conservatorio Superior de Musica of that city. Nowadays he is regarded as one of the leading Spanish early music performers and his teachers have included Jose Miguel Moreno, Hopkinson Smith, Paul O'Dette and Patrick O'Brien.
He has given numerous concerts all around the world, at international festivals such as the early music festivals of Bruges, Utrecht, Caen, Saintes, Barcelona, Los Siglos de Oro of Caja Madrid, the Boston Chamber Music Festival, the Festival Casals of Puerto Rico, the Festival Internacional de Musica y Danza of Granada, the "Misiones de Chiquitos" Festival of Bolivia, and in concert halls such as the Auditorium Nacional of Madrid, the Opera Comique of Paris, the National Library of Washington, the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Teatro Real of Madrid and the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory.
His recording work has yielded a number of discs either with him a soloist on the vihuela, theorbo or guitar, or as accompanist for singers Marta Almajano and Carlos Mena, or as the continuo player of the ensemble Al Ayre Espanol, or as a member of Poema Harmonico. He leads the groups La Correnta (which is specialised in Spanish Renaissance and Baroque music) and the plucked-string instrument ensemble Armoniosi Concerti. With the latter, he recorded for harmonia mundi the disc "Zarambeques" which received excellent international reviews.
He holds the professorship in early instruments of plucked strings at the Conservatorio Superior de Musica "Manuela Castillo" in Seville.
