     Accademia Bizantina

The soloists of the Accademia Bizantina, all natives of the Italian peninsula, have succeeded in making this ensemble one of today's finest Baroque groups. Their story began in Ravenna in 1983, and has been marked by a number of decisive encounters, from Jb'rg Demus, who suggested the name, to Ottavio Dantone, who became the ensemble's musical director in 1996 and brought to it his expertise in historically informed performance, leading up to its present eminent position. Over the past ten years, with Stefano Montanari as leader, the Accademia has carved out a niche in both concert and recording life thanks to its vitality and communicative energy. From Monteverdi to Sarti, its discography offers many examples of its stylistic mastery, whether in Purcell's The Fairy Queen, Vivaldi's Il Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'lnventione or Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, not forgetting Alessandro Scarlatti, Marcello, Porpora, Galuppi, and Corelli. The recording of the latter's Sonatas op.5 was awarded a Diapason d'Or in November 2005. Among the most recent releases are two devoted to Vivaldi: the opera Tito Manlio and a CD of sacred music with the soprano Sandrine Piau.

The Accademia made its debut in the world of opera with Sarti's Giulio Sabino at Ravenna in 1999. This production was soon followed by Handel's Orlando and the three surviving operas of Monteverdi. As a result, the ensemble was invited to appear at such festivals as Beaune and lesi, where it collaborated with Francesco Degrada in the revival of two masterpieces by Pergolesi, L'Olimpiade and // Flaminio. More recently, the Accademia Bizantina has been involved in the foundation of a sacred music festival in Faenza ('Creator'), which has given the first revival in modern times of Hasse's oratorio Sant'Elena al calvario, the creation of its own chorus, Coro dell'Accademia', and the project of a school for the study of early music.
