     Sungji Hong

Sungji Hong, born in South Korea in 1973, studied composition in Seoul before moving to England where she completed her Master in Music at the Royal Academy of Music in London and a PHD in composition with Nicola LeFanu at the University of York. She has won numerous international prizes. Her creative output includes solo, orchestral, choral, ballet and electro-acoustic music with special interest on timbre and pre-determined pitch structures. Her works are regularly performed at international festivals and on major concert series by leading ensembles and orchestras such as the soloists of the Opera House Covent Garden, the Arditti String Quartet, the Nieuw ensemble of Amsterdam and others.



Sungji HONG (1973, Korea)

Sungji Hong's creative output ranges from works for solo instruments to orchestral, choral, ballet and electroacoustic music, and displays her special interest in timbre and pre-determined pitch structures. Her musical language is colourful with its imagery and its exquisite delicacy.

Her works have been commissioned by institutes and festivals such as the Fromm Music Foundation (Harvard University), the Tongyoung International Music Festival, and MATA (Music At The Anthology), and regularly performed in international festivals and concert series throughout Europe, the United States and Asia by leading ensembles and orchestras including the Soloists of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Nieuw Ensemble of Amsterdam, the TIMF Ensemble, the Onix Ensemble, the Arditti String Quartet, Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin, Ensemble Musica Viva Hannover, the Radio and Television Symphony Orchestra of Belgrade, the Orchestra of Slovenian National Theatre Opera and Ballet, the BBC Singers and Trio Mediaeval.

Her music has been broadcast on Croatian, Serbian, Portuguese, Brazilian and Dutch radio and it has been recorded and released on the Dutton label and distributed in limited editions by the Association of Serbian Composers. In September 2005, her Missa Lumen de Lumine, commissioned by Trio Mediaeval, was released by ECM Records.

She has won the Brave New Works Composers Competition (1st Prize), the Temple church composition competition (1st Prize), the Crwth Competition (1st Prize), the international competition for original ballet music ISCM World Music Days-Slovenia (1st Prize), the Montserrat International Camera Music Composition Competition (1st Prize), the Theodore Front Prize (IA WM), the Yoshiro Irino Memorial Prize (ACL) and others prizes and awards.

She studied composition with Kyungsun Suh at the Hanyang University in Seoul, where she graduated with honours in composition. She subsequently completed her MMus with Robert Saxton and Paul Patterson at the Royal Academy of Music in London and her PhD in composition with Nicola LeFanu at the University of York. She has participated in various workshops and masterclasses such as Voix Nouvelles (Royaumont) and Darmstadt where she studied with Brian Ferneyhough, Jonathan Harvey, Theo Loevendie, Tristan Murail and Toshio Hosokawa.
