     Andrew Smith
 
 

Andrew Smith (born 1970) moved to Norway from Liverpool, England, in 1984. Since completing studies in Music and English at the University of Oslo he has worked for the Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival and as organist and choirmaster at the English church in Oslo. He is currently working as a self-employed composer and translator.

Andrew Smith has written a number of works, mostly for organ, choir, or small chamber ensemble. In 1999 he was commissioned to write Overvintring for the newly started chamber music festival Vinterfestspill i Bergstaden in Roros, Norway. The following year he contributed Syv sanser (Seven Senses), an installation/concert featuring paintings by Roros artist Olav Dille. Andrew Smith's Ave Maria, Regina caeli and Ave Maris Stella, for the Norwegian group Trio Medi?val, have been performed extensively in Scandinavia, Europe and the USA. In 2005 Andrew Smith was commissioned to write a piece for the Scottish vocal ensemble Cappella Nova, who in 2004 had given the first performance of his Choir & Organ commission Lux illuxit laetabunda. Current projects include a set of pieces for the Girl Choristers of Washington National Cathedral.
