     Yuri Bashmet

Country: Russia
Birth: Jun 2, 1953 in Rostov-on-Don, Russia

Professional violists are often limited by a scarcity of repertoire for their instrument, however Yuri Bashmet has successfully surmounted this challenge and enjoys a flourishing international solo career. Born in 1953 in Rostov-on-Don in Russia and raised in Lvov in the Ukraine, he began studies at the Moscow Conservatoire at age 18. Barely out of his teens, he became the youngest person ever to be appointed to a professorship at that same institution. In 1976, Bashmet won the first prize at the International Viola Competition in Munich, which effectively launched his career.

Bashmet has been the first violist ever to give a solo recital in a number of major concert halls, including La Scala in Milan and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. Today he is widely regarded as the finest viola player on the international circuit, and has brought newfound status to this somewhat unsung orchestral instrument. He has inspired many composers to write for him, notably fellow Russian, Alfred Schnittke. In 1986, he premiered the composer's now-ubiquitous Viola Concerto at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.

Other works written for Bashmet include Georgian composer Giya Kancheli's Mourned by the Wind, which the violist premiered at the Berlin Festival, The Myrrh Bearer by John Tavener, and Sofia Gubaidulina's Viola Concerto, which he premiered with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Kent Nagano in April 1997. Bashmet also gave the world premiere of Benjamin Britten's recently edited Double Concerto for violin and viola with Gidon Kremer and the Halle Orchestra conducted by Kent Nagano in Manchester in 1998.

The year 1992 marked the beginning of Bashmet's partnership with the Moscow Soloists, which he directs himself. Comprised of musicians nominated by professors at the Moscow Conservatoire, it features some of the brightest new talent from the Russian school of string playing. In recent seasons, the group has appeared in Moscow, Athens, Amsterdam, Paris, and at the BBC Promenades.

Bashmet has appeared with all the world's leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic, Royal Concertgebouw, Boston Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Montreal Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and London's Philharmonia Orchestra. In 1993, the London Symphony Orchestra presented a four-concert Yuri Bashmet festival at the Barbican. Chamber music collaborators over the years have included Gidon Kremer, the Borodin Quartet, Viktoria Mullova, Mstislav Rostropovich and Maxim Vengerov.
